Staining wood fulfils two functions: protection & beautification. Whether it's deck staining or fence staining, oil and penetrating stain saturates wood fibers to protect them from damage due to freezing water, harsh UV light, mildew and other fungi as well as foot traffic and spilled liquids. Some water-based stains sit on top of the wood surface, protecting by forming a continuous, flexible and gas-permeable membrane. The extremely wide variety of stain colours and finishes allow you or your designer to accentuate the features of your property for a classic and natural look.

Wood benefits from staining during all stages of its life. Studies have shown that mildew begins to grow on wood within 1 year of exposure (Feist & Hon, 1984). A common misconception is that wood benefits from 'breathing' for 2 years following installation. This is inaccurate, or at least exaggerated (6 weeks is sufficient). Once mildew becomes established in wood, it is hard to eradicate. It's best to prevent it's growth from the outset by using a quality stain on properly prepared surfaces. Mill glaze can be removed chemically or by sanding -- weathering is often not enough. Similarly, if your wood is already deteriorating: protect it now! Wood conditioners and brighteners, along with power washing and sanding can rejuvenate most older exposed wood, whether for deck staining or fence staining.

It is one of the oldest and simplest methods of protecting exposed wood against the elements and premature weathering.
